Who is Amritpal Singh?

Amritpal Singh is a radical Sikh separatist leader who heads a group called Waris Punjab De, which supports the Khalistan movement. He has been on the run from Indian authorities since March 18, 2023, after he escaped a police raid in Jalandhar. He has a large following on social media and has called for a Sarbat Khalsa, a congregation of Sikhs, to discuss issues concerning the Sikh community. His popularity and calls for a separate Sikh nation have sparked protests and violence in India and abroad

What is the Khalistan Movement?

The Khalistan movement is a Sikh separatist movement seeking to create a homeland for Sikhs by establishing a sovereign state called Khalistan in the Punjab region1 The movement began in the wake of the fall of the British Empire and gained momentum in the 1970s and 1980s with the support of the Sikh diaspora The movement reached its peak in 1984, when the Indian Army stormed the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of Sikhs, to flush out militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was killed in the operation The same year, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards, sparking anti-Sikh riots that killed thousands of Sikhs across India. The movement declined in the 1990s due to a heavy police crackdown, factional infighting, and loss of public support1 However, there is still some support for the movement within India and among the Sikh diaspora, especially in the UK, Canada, and Australia The movement advocates for a separate state with varying boundaries, some including parts of Pakistan and other Indian states The movement also has a proposed flag and a capital city
