The Palestinian militant group Hamas struck Israel with thousands of rockets without warning early Saturday morning, sending groups of gunmen across the border during one of the holiest weekends of the Jewish calendar. A stunned Israel has now declared war and vows to inflict what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called an “unprecedented price.” Joel Senick has the details.

Netanyahu is the country’s longest serving prime minister. He has faced numerous flare-ups in violence with Palestinian militants, a cascade of elections, serious legal battles and chaotic street protests over his 16 years in office. As Redmond Shannon reports, this could be the greatest crisis Netanyahu has ever had to deal with.

The surprise attack stunned Israel and the world, triggering swift condemnation from Western leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, U.S. President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Meanwhile in Turkey, President Tayyip Erdogan pleaded for restraint, urging all sides to avoid being impulsive. Touria Izri has more on the international community’s reactions.

Paris may be known as the City of Lights, but the French capital is also earning a new reputation as it struggles with a surge in bedbug infestations in both private homes and public spaces. As Mike Armstrong explains, the anger and anxiety over the nasty insects has sparked a political crisis.

And finally, with the impacts of the climate crisis encroaching on more Canadians each year, it’s no surprise anxiety is on the rise. As Farah Nasser reports for The New Reality, eco-grief is a new term to describe a serious global issue – not about what to do about climate change, but rather about what it is doing to us.
