For last night's Zoom session of Ringwood Folk Club, I chose this song, one of many I learnt in Newfoundland when I was there in 2010. The only time I've worn rubber boots since I was a child was when my wife and I were taken out to pick bakeapples (known as cloudberries in Scandinavia) on Fogo Island. Our friend (who we had met the day before) lent us a pair of rubber boots each so we could walk safely around the swampy ground where the treasured bakeapples could be found. He later made them into jam for us, which we took back to share with Lew Dite and his wife in Montreal.
Probably the best known version is by Dick Nolan, but it has been recorded by several Newfoundland artists including Pat and Joe Byrne and Shanneyganock.
The song appears to be a variation on an old English or Irish song called "The Bold English Navvy". The Dubliners sing it as "Navvy Boots".
