Dr. Vibhu Prakash, is widely recognized for his extensive work in vulture conservation in India and is responsible for the revival of the nearly extinct bird in this country. His childhood and youth experiences offer insight into his remarkable four-decade journey of studying and safeguarding raptors in the country.
During the early 1990s, Dr. Vibhu Prakash and his team collected data on vulture populations across national parks, where their ongoing surveillance revealed an alarming drop in the vulture population. This became the basis for him to set up the vulture recovery programme, which also guided the Indian government's response to the previously unnoticed issue.
Dr. Vibhu Prakash played a critical role in founding the internationally acclaimed Vulture Conservation Breeding Programme, which includes centres in various cities across India. These centres presently care for over 800 vultures, and hundreds of hatchlings have been successfully nurtured, leading to the revival of three Gyps vulture species. Dr Prakash is also a teacher while being a conservationist, which is perhaps his way of spearheading the efforts of the next generation.
